Marie spent a couple of years at St Marys learning to play, before moving to Blacktown Pipe Band in late 2006. In early 2008 Marie joined Hawkesbury City Pipe Band.
Whats the best part about being in this band?
One of best parts is the friendships I have made, but just as important, getting to improve my piping by competing. I enjoy the street marches and other events as well. Its great getting to go out and do what I enjoy and be with a great group of people at the same time. It’s great to see how everyone works together to do what is best for the band.
What inspired you to learn to play the pipes?
I don’t really know, I have always loved the pipes and my grandad played. One day I just decided I would too. I hunted around until I found somewhere I could learn which would fit in with my work and then I started going to lessons. After about 8 months I was on the pipes and at the end of the first year I played in my first solos. What a nerve wracking experience. I won a gold medal in my first chanter competition which was exciting.
What do you do when you aren’t doing playing the pipes?
Working, spending time with family or studying! I love to follow my favourite football team, the Otago Highlanders, and Anton Oliver, and am currently researching my family tree.
